Today's Scripture
"Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor." James 4:9-10 NLT
Thoughts for Today
When we have done wrong, we need to experience sorrow for our sin. We need to admit our need to God and humble ourselves before him. Only then will we be able to walk in agreement with him. Only then will we be able to become the person he designed us to be and accomplish his purpose for our journey. The Bible promises that when we humble ourselves before him, he will lift us up in honor.
Consider this …
Webster's describes humble as "not proud or haughty; not arrogant or assertive; reflecting, expressing, or offered in a spirit of deference or submission."
When we humbly submit to God, he will guide us and help us make right choices.
He leads the humble in doing right, teaching them his way. Psalm 25:9
When we walk with him in humility, he helps us walk in wisdom.
Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. Proverbs 11:2 NLT
God blesses the humble with his grace, his unearned favor.
And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say,
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6 NLT
God refreshes and blesses the humble.
The high and lofty one who inhabits eternity, the Holy One, says this: "I live in that high and holy place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble. I refresh the humble and give new courage to those with repentant hearts. Isaiah 57:15 NLT
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the many times I've allowed pride to keep me from repentance . . . from submitting to you . . . from walking with you. Help me to walk in humility. In Jesus' name . . .
These thoughts were drawn from …Stepping into Freedom: A Christ-Centered Twelve-Step Program by Jimmy Ray Lee, D.Min. This twelve-step program is suggested for use in support groups, recovery groups and home groups. It offers help for anyone struggling with a life-controlling problem like drug addiction, alcoholism, sexual addiction, gambling or workaholism. Note: This curriculum was written especially for small groups and we encourage people to use it that way. However, it can also be used effectively as a personal study for individuals or couples.
