The Worst Sin

“The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me” (John 16:9 NLT).

Imagine going to your doctor and complaining of chronic headaches, but he or she tells you to take some aspirin. It may help temporarily. But it won’t solve the problem.

Good doctors won’t just deal with the symptoms; they’ll deal with the cause.

Likewise, the Holy Spirit has come to bring us to Jesus. Yet so often in the church, we’ll major on the minors. In our conversations with nonbelievers, we’ll focus on their lifestyle choices instead of their need for Jesus.

My objective is to establish a dialogue with someone, regardless of the sinful choices they’ve made. That’s because when a person comes to Jesus, everything else ultimately will get sorted out. But if I focus on other things and never get around to telling them about Jesus, then I can, in effect, drive them away.

The problem is that many times people think of the church as being against everything. Yet our message is the gospel, and we want people to believe. Then their lives will change as a result.

Jesus, speaking about the Holy Spirit, said, “And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me” (John 16:8-9 NLT). The Holy Spirit has come to show us our need for Jesus.

The worst sin that you can commit—and the one with the most far-reaching consequences—is to not believe in Jesus Christ.

Maybe you’re thinking, “No, murder is worse.”

Actually, that’s an outgrowth of the sin inside a person who doesn’t know God.

Saying no to Christ is a complete rejection of the work of the Holy Spirit. The root of all our problems, the worst sin we can commit, is not believing. And we will be judged for that.
