An Immovable Rock

“On that day I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock. All the nations will gather against it to try to move it, but they will only hurt themselves.” —Zechariah 12:3

Years ago, there was an expression during a presidential campaign, “It’s the economy, stupid.” Now we could say in current international politics, “It’s Jerusalem, stupid.” Why is Jerusalem such a hot spot? It is the city of the past, the present, and the future.

Jerusalem became the capital of Israel under King David and was actually known as the City of David. It was there in Jerusalem that the first and the second temple were built. It was there in Jerusalem at Mount Moriah, which is the area we know now as the Temple Mount, that Abraham was willing to offer his son, Isaac, to the Lord.

But Jerusalem is also the city of the present. After the modern state of Israel was declared in 1948, a war of independence left the city divided, with Jordan maintaining control over the Old City, including the Temple Mount and most of the historic sites. But during the Six Day War in 1967, Israel was able to regain control of all of Jerusalem. And for the first time in many centuries, Jerusalem was under the control of the Jewish people again. The prophetic clock was ticking.

The Bible tells us that Jerusalem is the city of the future. The final conflict of humanity will not be fought over Paris or Rome or New York City. It will be fought over Jerusalem. That is why the Bible tells us to pay attention to Jerusalem. In Zechariah 12:2, God said, “I will make Jerusalem like an intoxicating drink that makes the nearby nations stagger when they send their armies to besiege Jerusalem and Judah.”

God has been working among believers in this era called the church age. And He is waiting to bring those last few believers in before He pours out His Spirit upon Israel again.

Summary sentence: Why is Jerusalem such a hot spot?
