A Well-Lived Life

Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.”(John 21:22)

We may look sometimes at someone else and think, Why does he get that and not me? Or, Why do I have to suffer and not her?

The Bible records a conversation between Jesus and Simon Peter where Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go” (John 21:18). The next verse says that Jesus was telling Simon Peter how he would die.

This was not great news for Peter, needless to say. He noticed John nearby and asked, “What about him, Lord?” (verse 21).

Jesus said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me” (verse 22).

In other words, “You just do what I have called you to do. Just be faithful to what I have set before you.”

That is to have a life that is well-lived. And this is very important to think about, especially if you are young. When you are young, you are making decisions and establishing patterns that will be with you for life. It is very significant to make the right choices in your youth.

So establish a good routine. Develop good habits, including a discipline to study the Bible every day. Develop a discipline to pray and rely on God. Develop a discipline to faithfully give of your finances to the Lord. Develop a discipline to share your faith with others. These are things that will stay with you. And these are things that form the foundation of a well-lived life.

Summary sentence: Be faithful with what God sets before you and do not be concerned about what others are called to do.
