If we don’t come aside with Jesus, it’s only a matter of time before we come apart.

Time to Unplug

And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. (Mark 6:31 NKJV)

During the next 24 hours, your heart will beat 103,000 times, your blood will travel 168,000,000 miles, you will breathe 23,000 times, inhale 480 cubic feet of air, eat 3.5 pounds of food, speak 4,800 words, move 750 muscles, and exercise 7 million brain cells.

No wonder we feel tired. We’re constantly going. We’re the only nation in the world with a mountain called Rushmore. American tombstones could be inscribed with three words: Hurried. Worried. Buried. We are always in a rush to get somewhere. We have all kinds of technology that is supposed to make our lives easier, but does it? I think it makes us a lot more distracted. We are having a perpetual conversation that just can’t wait.

I think it’s a great idea to unplug everything sometimes, to shut it all off, relax, and recharge. That is the principle of the Sabbath. It is not a legalistic day we have to observe, but it is a good time to simply focus on the Lord. For many of us that is Sunday. I love to see Sunday set apart as the Lord’s Day, just as the early church did. We should make our first priority to worship with God’s people, and I think God will honor that in our lives if we do.

Even Jesus took time off. In Mark 6 we read, “Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. And He said to them, ‘Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.’ For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat” (verses 30–31).

If we don’t come aside with Him, we will come apart. Focus on the things of God.
