Hands-on Faith for Families– week of July 21, 2014

Theme: 1 John 1:1-9

Light or Darkness?

Play: Have one person name various actions, such as baking a cake for a friend or stealing lunch money. The others should shout, “In the light,” meaning it's OK for others to see what they're doing, or "In the dark,” meaning people prefer to not have others see their actions.

Talk: When your family did this activity, you were able to connect sinful activities, things you didn't want others to see, to darkness and other activities, things that were OK for others to see, to the light. The Bible tells us in 1 John 1:5 that God is light and there is no darkness in Him at all. The darkness mentioned here is a picture of sin. When we follow God, we choose to act in godly ways that keep us in His light. When we ignore God's way, we choose darkness instead of God’s light. Can you name some actions that show God’s light and some that show the world’s darkness?

Pray: Ask God to help you continue to walk in His light and not in the darkness of the world.
