Today’s Truth
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see

(Hebrews 11:1, NIV).

Friend to Friend
Hebrews 11 teaches that we must do three things to stay hopeful in the storms of life: embrace an eternal perspective from God, establish a daily routine with God, and trust the total sovereignty of God. Today we focus on trusting the sovereignty of God.

Our faith, our confidence, our assurance and our hope are all grounded in the sovereignty of God. Sovereignty is a big word. And an even bigger concept. It is worth grabbing.

First - sovereignty means the King is in charge.

The word “sovereignty” obviously comes from the word “sovereign.” And sovereign means “he who is in charge.”

There was an old black and white TV show from the 1950’s called “Father Knows Best.” The title says it all. Dad knows what is going on. Dad is in charge.

When we were raising our two kids it was different. Mama knew best – when it came to the daily workings of home and the hearts and lives of our children. Why? Because I was the one who ran our home on a daily basis, and I was the one who spent the most time with our children. I knew what was really going on. Now when it came to finances, insurance, car maintenance and the upkeep of our home, Dan knew best. We worked as a team, each having the most input in our areas of expertise.

In your life … your hope and your faith depends on who is in charge. Sovereignty means God knows best. Sovereignty means God is in charge. Sovereignty means the King is in charge.

Second - sovereignty means the King is in control.

He is not just in charge - empowered. He is in control - working behind the scenes. He doesn’t just have the authority. He uses it!

One of my dozens of favorite verses - which I call life verses - says this: “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them” (Romans 8:28, NLT).

That verse does not say God allows only good things to happen to us. It says He works all things together for our good. The good, the bad and the ugly of life - God uses it all for our good.

His part - is to be in control. Our part - is to love Him and pursue His purpose.

We are in a time of crisis. And we are going to be okay. We can find our way forward.

We can find hope in times of crisis if we:

  • embrace an eternal perspective from God
  • establish a daily routine with God
  • trust the sovereignty of God

Which of those needs your attention right now?

Which of those is your word from Jesus today?

Which of these steps do you need to take to get through this crisis?

Whatever crisis has you today - here is your hope: God’s got this. He is in charge. He is in control. And He loves you more than you will ever know. Our hope is in Him!

Let’s Pray
Father, I desperately need hope in my time of crisis. I need hope now! And when I am in charge - I feel hopeless. Forgive me for thinking I can do this on my own. I want to trust You. I recognize that You are sovereign - that You are in charge and control. Thank you for being so patient with me. Thank you for renewing my hope. I make this prayer in the name of Jesus - who is my hope.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn
I encourage you to spend some time alone and answer this question: Who is really God in your life? Be honest. Fear and anxiety come when we assume control instead of allowing God to be God in our lives. He really is who He says He is, and He will do what He promises to do.  Surrender yourself to the Father and crown Him Lord of all!
