If Your Faith Feels Weak

“He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’” Matthew 17:20 (NIV)
We sang these words at church this past Sunday, and they’ve never rang truer: “Yet not I but through Christ in me.”
Just the night before, I told my husband my faith feels weak. As someone who has been a Christian for a long time, I struggle to admit this is true. I feel like in times of trials and uncertainty, my years of following Jesus should make my faith strong. Instead, I find myself tired and wondering if my faith is strong enough to carry me through when life gets hard.
But I keep going back to Matthew 17:20, when Jesus said all we need is a mustard seed-sized faith: “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
If you didn’t know, mustard seeds are rather small! Yet somehow those little mustard seeds break through. They grow and become strong. I’m not sure how, but they do.
Maybe you are also walking through a season where your faith feels weak. This can feel vulnerable and scary because we realize we are not in control. Friend, we can rest in knowing that mustard seed-sized faith is enough. God isn’t asking us to be strong. In fact, 2 Corinthians 12:9 says His power is made perfect when we are weak.
God is the One who takes our small seed of faith in Him and plants it. He is the One who moves the mountains and helps us break through and grow in the midst of what seems impossible. This is really good news. It means it’s not all up to us.
All we have to do is keep going back to Jesus. Keep giving Him what faith we have and trusting that He alone will carry us to the other side of what we are facing.
This is why I’m thankful for gifts like worship songs we can sing even when the words don’t feel true at the moment. And I’m thankful for Scripture verses we commit to memory. Because something about singing praise and reciting God’s Word anyway actually does make a difference. Even when we don’t see Him or feel Him moving, we can recall the ways He has been faithful to us and cling to the Truth of what the Bible says.
We don’t have to muster up big faith today — God can work in mighty ways even with small faith.
God, thank You for the gift of faith in Jesus. Thank You that even when my faith feels weak, You do the impossible. Father, I pray for strength in a season that feels impossible. Help me to know and love You more through it. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
