The Power In Storytelling

Jesus said… “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how He has had mercy on you.”  Mark 5:19 NIV

Who doesn’t love a good story?

It’s neat to watch children’s reactions when reading or telling them a story.  There are times that they get so captivated that it is as if they are a character in the story.  If you’ve been around children you know that most of them always have a story of some sort to tell.  Though many don’t realize it, most adults enjoy hearing and telling a story just as much as a child does.

I began attending church when I was in my late teens.  I didn’t know anything about the Lord.  I had heard of Jesus and that He died on a cross, but that was all that I knew. Growing up my parents taught me all about drugs and alcohol, but not the Lord.

While attending church services, I related very well when a pastor would share a story.  My favorite thing was when someone would share about what God had done in their life and how He changed them.

It gave me a little bit of hope that despite my past, things might turn out okay.  I later learned that these stories that people would tell about their lives were called testimonies.

Once I accepted the Lord into my life, He began to change me and made me new.  2 Corinthians 5:17 says,

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature, the old has gone, the new has come.

It was then that God showed me that I had a very powerful story to share.  Just as other peoples’ testimonies helped bring me to the Lord, my story is also bringing people to the Lord.

Jesus wants us to share what he has done so that others may know the truth. He knows the power of our stories, and He will use them to bring others to himself.

Are you telling the story that God has given you?

Take a moment today to share one thing that the Lord has or is doing in your life. You never know how powerful your story is until you start telling it.

Dear Lord, thank You for giving each of us a story to tell. Help us to open up and speak with boldness.  What You have done and are doing in our lives is a powerful story for all to hear.  Let us never forget where our story came from.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
