God Will Command His Angels to Guard You
By Whitney Hopler

“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” – Psalm 91:11-12, NIV

During a prayer retreat in Ireland recently, I enjoyed some fascinating conversations with other retreat participants about how God has worked in their lives through their guardian angels. I listened to some powerful stories that others shared, and I recalled a time when, I believe, God commanded my guardian angel to rescue me from being hit by a car. When I was ten years old and attending a summer camp, I stepped into the path of a car while daydreaming. As I crossed a street without paying attention, a car screeched, and the counselors and kids with me screamed. But time froze for me. Stuck in the street just inches from a speeding car, I saw the car appear to stop and felt someone lifting me while a loving feeling surged through me. In an instant, I landed safely on the sidewalk without injury. No one had any explanation of how that could have happened. I’ll never forget that miraculous experience. In the years since then, God’s protection through my guardian angel has strengthened my faith

Psalm 91:11-12 reveals that God commands his angels concerning us, to guard us in everything we do. It shows that God and his angels are not distant or indifferent, but are actively involved in our daily lives. This passage depicts angels serving as compassionate caretakers. When we look at the imagery the Bible uses here, we see a touching example of love in action. The angels lift us up in their hands, ensuring that we don’t even strike our feet against a stone. Through our guardian angels, our loving Heavenly Father cares for us – his beloved children – in all situations. God’s commands to his angels reveals his intimate involvement in our well-being. It highlights God’s attentiveness to every step we take in life. God protects us not as a distant, impersonal force, but as a close, caring presence that attends to all of our needs.

Consider the times when you’ve needed some extra help with something. Maybe you needed to be rescued from a dangerous situation, like I did when I stepped into the path of a speeding car. Or, maybe you needed guidance, and God answered your prayers for that by commanding an angel to help you see the best way forward – a way that saved you from making a wrong decision. Psalm 91:11-12 reassures you that God’s angels are present, ready to uplift you in whatever ways God commands them to do. It’s a powerful image of God’s love and commitment to your well-being. God’s protection through his angels is available to you whenever you need help of any kind.

This passage encourages you to step forward in faith day by day, knowing you’re under the loving care of God and his angels. You can walk through each day with confidence – not because you’re immune to difficulties, but because God’s protection encompasses all your ways. Your guardian angel and other holy angels are a testament to God’s care for you, ensuring that you get the help you need when you need it, according to God’s will.

In a fallen world where you must deal with stress and danger, you can rest assured that God and his angels compassionately care for you. So, let that give you peace of mind in all situations!

Intersecting Faith and Life:

As you reflect on how God will command his angels to guard you whenever you need their help, reflect on these questions:

  • When have you noticed protection from God and his angels in your life?
  • How does thinking about God’s angels guarding you change your perspective on facing your challenges?
  • In what areas of your life do you need to trust more in God’s protection for you?
  • The next time you feel fear or uncertainty, how can you remind yourself of the constant care God gives you through his angels?

Sometimes, anxiety can hit without any recognizable provocation, or our anxiety can feel more intense than the situation warrants. When we find ourselves in that place, we can pray the prayer ancient Israel's second king, David, prayed at the end of Psalm 139, trusting that our God will and is leading us to increased freedom.
