The Collapse of Chariots and Horses – Beloved Women – September 9, 2020
READ: “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” (Psalm 20:7 ESV)
TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT: Within a month’s time, things collapsed. In just one month, our country, with “In God We Trust” boldly printed on our currency revealed just how untrue that declaration is.
During ancient times, a nation’s military strength was dependent upon the number of horses and chariots in its possession. Here, David proclaims that Israel’s salvation was not based on her possessions, but on God’s character and nature. Because of Him, when all else fails, they will stand.
We each have our own “chariots and horses.” Our proclivity to trust in them is both logical and subtle. From childhood, we are ingrained with a list of things to be trusted – education and skills, jobs and finances, neighborhoods and status, family, leaders, relationships and even ourselves.
Sure, for believers, “In God we trust” is taught in church, even encouraged, but our actions to the contrary tend to speak much louder than our words.
So, when our chariots and horses collapsed and fell, many of us were left wondering in what or whom could we trust. The answer: God.
Israel saw the Red Sea split, walls fall down, the sun stand still, and a giant fall. They knew God as a deliverer, protector, provider and promise keeper.
History taught them that regardless of how dire a situation looked, God could be trusted. The same is true for you today.
PRAY: Lord, please reveal to me the chariots and horses I have trusted in my life. Forgive me for placing more faith in those than I have in You. Help me as I seek to have my words match my actions. “Lord, I believe, but help my unbelief.” In Jesus’ name, Amen.
REFLECT: Consider those things that you have been taught or have grown to trust in. Confess them. Now, identify those times when you have clearly seen God’s character at work in your life. Give Him thanks.
SHARE: No matter how dire the situation looks, God can be trusted.
