A Friend Indeed – Beloved Women – June 23, 2023

“Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.” - Exodus 17:11-12 ESV
TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT
When we’re choosing friends, what qualities should we look for? Somebody fun? Somebody with the same interests? Sure, those things are good ingredients for a friendship. But we can look to the Bible for guidance on friendship.
In today’s passage, we see that Moses’ hands were growing weary. If he couldn’t keep his hands up, Israel would lose the battle. Because of Aaron’s and Hur’s support, however, they were victorious over the Amalekites. Proverbs 17:17 tells us that “a friend loves at all times.” (ESV) Proverbs 18:24 says “one who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin.” (ESV) Do you have friends who are in your corner in hard times? You will need them.
When you’re weary, and feel as if you’re losing the battle, do you have friends who come to help? When trouble comes, do you have friends who will hold you up? What kind of friend are you?
PRAY
Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for the friend I have in Jesus. Please help me to find friends who are loyal and supportive, in good times and bad. Please help me to be that kind of friend. In the name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.
REFLECT
Take a few minutes to think and pray about how your friends are doing. Is God prompting you to reach out with love to a friend who is having a hard time? Ask God how you can support her.
