A Willing Heart – Beloved Women – July 13, 2020

READ: “And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God.” (Haggai 1:14 ESV)

TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT: Since the time she started walking, one of our daughters has often insisted on doing things “by myself.” One of my favorite memories of her as a toddler is watching her steer a grocery cart. With her arms raised above her head, hands holding onto the cart handle, and her vision completely blocked by it, she’d proudly proclaim “I got it, Momma. Watch.”

Meanwhile, I gently guided the cart from the front.

That’s how we are with God, isn’t it? Blindly proclaiming, “I got it.” Meanwhile, He’s leading, directing and protecting.

When faced with challenges too difficult for them to handle, the remnant retreated, falsely believing that doing what God called them to do was based upon their ability. When they were finally confronted with their sin, they repented and obeyed. Then, God stepped in.  He didn’t expect them to rebuild the temple in their own strength. He never expected them to come up with the plan. He just wanted willing hearts.

Then He, “stirred up the spirit….” Throughout God’s word, we see several people doing supernatural things for God’s glory.  Yet, not one was called because of anything special they possessed– beyond a willing heart.

The results are all His. “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13.)

PRAY: Lord, “create in me a clean heart, and renew a right spirit in me.” Help me to trust You to give me everything I need to do what You have put me on this earth to do, even when it is difficult. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

REFLECT: Is there anything that you are hesitant to begin for fear of being overwhelmed? Do you constantly feel anxious wondering how you can get it all done? Surrender these to the Lord and come to Him with a willing heart.
