God Knows…When I’m Left Out or Left Behind – Part 3
The day came for Jesus to leave Earth. It was 40 days since His resurrection. Jesus and His disciples walked out of Jerusalem toward the Mount of Olives. The disciples didn’t realize Jesus was leaving so soon.
There on the Mount of Olives Jesus raised His hands in blessing. The disciples watched in awe as He slowly rose higher and higher. They trained their eyes to watch Him as long as possible. Then a cloud of glory hid Him from view. They heard someone speaking.
“Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven?” Turning, they saw two angels. The angel had come to encourage them. “This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11). Jesus will keep His promise: “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:3).
Being left behind isn’t so bad IF you know that the person who left still loves you and always will; IF you have something to do to keep you busy; and IF you know it’s only for a while.
The disciples walked thoughtfully back to Jerusalem. Jesus had given them an important work to do, sharing the good news of love, forgiveness, freedom, and salvation to others. They were to teach what Christ had taught. They were to spread His love everywhere. This task would keep them busy!
The disciples had been left behind, but they knew their separation from Jesus was only temporary. When He came back to get them, they would get to live with Him forever!
The disciples didn’t have to worry about the future any more. With a sense of triumph and thanksgiving, they told and retold the wonderful story of the resurrection of Christ and His return to heaven. Jesus had said, “I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God” (John 20:17). The family of heaven and the family of earth are one big family. That’s something to remember the next time we feel left out or left behind.
