Christmas Evans was born at Ysgarwen, Wales. Raised by a mean uncle, he ran with a gang of ruffians until he ran away from home. He became a servant to a Presbyterian minister, and was converted at 17 during revival meetings. Learning to read and write with the help of the minister, he took such an interest in spiritual things, living such an exemplary life, that some of his former companions beat him severely, putting out one of his eyes. The Baptists of Llandyssul influenced him greatly, and at 24 he was ordained, preaching in churches, coal mines, and fields. The Holy Spirit so blessed his ministry that it became known as 'Mr. Welch Revival."
