Edgar J. Goodspeed was born in Quincy, Illinois. Twenty-seven years later he was teaching at the University of Chicago and after that held professorships at the University of California, Los Angeles. Goodspeed authored over 60 books and 200 scholarly articles, including a "liberal" translation of the New Testament and How Came the Bible?
