Selina Shirley, Countess of Huntingdon Hastings (1707 to 1791)

Methodist

She Sold Her Personal Jewels for the Faith.

Selina Shirley Hastings, Countess of Huntingdon was born this day. Converted at age thirty, she became a Methodist the following year. After the deaths of her children and husband, she opened her large home to religious use, and employed her rank, wealth and personal influence to support Methodism. Associated for a time with the Wesley brothers, she broke with them and became a Calvinist Methodist, siding with George Whitefield in the controversies which developed. Selina established sixty chapels in England, once selling her personal jewels.
