Rowland Hill (1744 to 1833)
No Promotion for Preaching where He Saw the Need.
Rowland Hill was born at Hawkstone, England. A popular preacher, he could have gone far in the church had he not insisted on preaching where he saw the need, rather than in waiting to be assigned to a specific chapel. By the force of his eloquent preaching, he drew large crowds whether touring or at the Surry Chapel, London. He published sermons and hymns, the best-known of his books being Village Dialogues.
