Nathan Hale (1755 to 1776)
Congregational Church
Only One Life.
Nathan Hale was born at Coventry Connecticut, in colonial America. A clean-cut young man of Christian beliefs, education and character, he was vitally concerned for the spiritual welfare of his comrades. During the revolutionary war, when the colonies fought Britain, he volunteered to go behind enemy lines and secure information vital to the colonial forces. There he was captured by the English and hanged September 22, 1776. As he prepared to die, he exhorted onlookers to prepare for death. His final words were supposed to have been, "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country."
