George Washington Doane is born in Trenton, New Jersey. He became a proponent of Episcopal missions and wrote hymns to support it. Among his memorable works are "Fling out the Banner, Let it Float" and "Softly Now the Light of Day." Doane died in 1859.
Julia Ward Howe (1819 to 1910)
She Authored the "Battle Hymn of the Republic."
Julia Ward Howe was born in New York City. An ardent abolitionist, she wrote the hymn that became the theme song of the Union armies during the American civil war and stirs the soul yet: "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Regretably, Julia was a Unitarian.
