Birth of Charles C. Luther, Baptist evangelist and hymnwriter, in Worcester, Maryland. Ordained in 1866, Luther pursued evangelistic activities most of his life, taking two years out (1891-93) to pastor a Baptist church in Bridgeport, Conn. He wrote about 25 hymns, including "Must I Go, and Empty-Handed Be?"
