Birth of Andrew Murray, South African Dutch Reformed leader, in Cape Town. He was a conservative theologian with a profound devotional life. Murray is best known today for his 240 devotional writings, which place great emphasis on the need for a rich, personal devotional life. Many of his writings explain how he saw this devotion and its outworking in the life of the Christian. His most widely-read book is Abide in Christ.
V. Raymond Edman, missionary, educator, minister, editor and writer, was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois. He served in Ecuador for five years as a missionary to the Quechua Indians, before returning home because of illness. In 1940 he began a quarter-century presidency of Wheaton College, during which he found time to learn most Wheaton students' names, write over 200 articles and 20 books, and edit the Alliance Witness.
