Francis Joseph Cardinal Spellman (1889 to 1967)
Archbishop of New York.
Birth of Cardinal Spellman in Whitman, Massachusetts. Ordained in 1916, he served in a parish church before becoming the first American assistant to the papal Secretariat of State, and eventually archbishop of New York and a cardinal.
