Anne Ross Cundell Cousin (1824 to 1906)
She Was Called the Scottish Rosetti.
Birth of Anne Ross Cundell Cousin, author of the hymn "The Sands of Time Are Sinking." She was an accomplished musician, author and linguist. Anne grew up in the Church of England, but later became a Presbyterian and married William Cousin, a Scottish Free Church minister. She created the "Sands of Time" from phrases in the letters of Samuel Rutherford (1600-1661), the famed Scottish preacher. Her daughter once said that Mrs. Cousin "fitted the pattern of her verse line by line" as she sat sewing in the manse at Irvine, where her husband was pastor. She has been called "a Scottish Christina Rossetti, with a more pronounced theology."
