Johann Sebastian Bach was born at Eisenach, Germany. His family were outstanding musicians, but he topped them all with an enormous and innovative output. His skill was unequalled in all areas of composition during the Baroque period, and yet he was not widely known as a composer in his day, and his music remained hidden until it was introduced to the world by Mendelssohn almost a century after his death. By then, his manuscripts were being used to wrap market goods. Two of his hymn tunes are the music to which we sing "Christ Is the World's True Light" and "0 Sacred Head, Now Wounded."
