Birth of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, at Ghent in Flanders. He attempted to supress the Reformation. Reigning from 1519-56, he was the European ruler who officially pronounced Martin Luther an outlaw and heretic. Worn out by the never-ending conflict, he retired two years before his death.
