Reuben "Bud" Robinson (1860 to 1942)

Nazarene

Stuttering Evangelist

When Bud Robinson became a Christian he could not read and stuttered so badly that men howled with laughter to hear him attempt to witness. But God transformed him into a notable evangelist, writer, and soul-winner for the newly-formed Nazarene denomination, partly through the efforts of Bud's wife, Sally.

Edward Mote (1797 to 1874)

Baptist

Nothing Less than Jesus

We remember Edward Mote as the author of the hymn "My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less than Jesus' Blood and Righteousness." Born in London, he was a cabinet maker as a young man. Having become a Christian, he was baptized November 1st, 1815, at 18 years of age. In the course of time, Mote became a Baptist pastor and served at Horsham, Sussex. His people loved him so much they offered him the title to the church, at which time he is reported to have said, "I do not want the chapel, I only want the pulpit; and when I cease to preach Christ, turn me out of that." His famous hymn was first sung to a sick woman because a hymnbook could not be found. The words that we sing are different than the draft.

John Julian (1839 to 1913)

Church of England

Hymnwriter's Friend

John Julian, born at St. Agnes, Cornwall became a vicar in the Church of England. He is best known for his wonderful reference tool, the Dictionary of Hymnology: Origin and History of Christian Hymns and Hymnwriters of All Ages and Nations, Together with Biographical and Critical Notices of Their Authors and Translators. He wrote a few worship hymns himself.
