John Fawcett was born in Yorkshire, England. A Baptist clergyman and educator, he was ordained in 1763, and held several pastorates before founding Rawdon College. Fawcett penned many sermons, essays and over 150 hymns. His best known hymn is "Blest be the Tie That Binds." All of his hymns were designed to be sung at the conclusion of a worship service.
