6 Save us and help us with your right hand, that those you love may be delivered. 7 God has spoken from his sanctuary: "In triumph I will parcel out Shechem and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth. 8 Gilead is mine, Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet, Judah is my scepter. 9 Moab is my washbasin, on Edom I toss my sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph." 10 Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom? 11 Is it not you, God, you who have rejected us and no longer go out with our armies? 12 Give us aid against the enemy, for human help is worthless.
6 That thy beloved may be delivered: save with thy right hand, and answer me. 7 God hath spoken in his holiness; I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth. 8 Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver; 9 Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe; over Philistia will I triumph. 10 Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom? 11 Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off? and wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our hosts? 12 Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.
6 That your beloved ones may be delivered, give salvation by your right hand and answer me! 7 God has promised in his holiness:
6 And for the sake of the one you love so much, reach down and help me - answer me! 7 That's when God spoke in holy splendor: "Brimming over with joy, I make a present of Shechem, I hand out Succoth Valley as a gift. 8 Gilead's in my pocket, to say nothing of Manasseh. Ephraim's my hard hat, Judah my hammer. 9 Moab's a scrub bucket - I mop the floor with Moab, Spit on Edom, rain fireworks all over Philistia." 10 Who will take me to the thick of the fight? Who'll show me the road to Edom? 11 You aren't giving up on us, are you, God? refusing to go out with our troops? 12 Give us help for the hard task; human help is worthless.
6 That Your beloved may be delivered, Save with Your right hand, and hear me. 7 God has spoken in His holiness: "I will rejoice; I will divide Shechem And measure out the Valley of Succoth. 8 Gilead is Mine; Manasseh is Mine; Ephraim also is the helmet for My head; Judah is My lawgiver. 9 Moab is My washpot; Over Edom I will cast My shoe; Over Philistia I will triumph." 10 Who will bring me into the strong city? Who will lead me to Edom? 11 Is it not You, O God, who cast us off? And You, O God, who did not go out with our armies? 12 Give us help from trouble, For the help of man is useless.
6 Now rescue your beloved people. Answer and save us by your power. 7 God has promised this by his holiness : "I will divide up Shechem with joy. I will measure out the valley of Succoth. 8 Gilead is mine, and Manasseh, too. Ephraim, my helmet, will produce my warriors, and Judah, my scepter, will produce my kings. 9 But Moab, my washbasin, will become my servant, and I will wipe my feet on Edom and shout in triumph over Philistia." 10 Who will bring me into the fortified city? Who will bring me victory over Edom? 11 Have you rejected us, OÂ God? Will you no longer march with our armies? 12 Oh, please help us against our enemies, for all human help is useless.
Matthew Henry's Commentary on Psalm 108:6-12
Chapter Contents
We may usefully select passages from different psalms, as here, Psalm 57, to help our devotions, and enliven our gratitude. When the heart is firm in faith and love, the tongue, being employed in grateful praises, is our glory. Every gift of the Lord honours and profits the possessor, as it is employed in God's service and to his glory. Believers may pray with assured faith and hope, for all the blessings of salvation; which are secured to them by the faithful promise and covenant of God. Then let them expect from him help in every trouble, and victory in every conflict. Whatever we do, whatever we gain, God must have all the glory. Lord, visit all our souls with this salvation, with this favour which thou bearest to thy chosen people.
