Benjamin Warfield was born in Lexington, Kentucky. Ordained into ministry in 1879, he pastored only a year before securing his first teaching position. From 1887 until his death in 1921, Warfield was professor of theology at Princeton Theological Seminary. He was an ardent Calvinist and a strict fundamentalist, holding to the "plenary" [full or whole] inspiration of the Bible when Higher Criticism seemed to have demolished Scripture. Today it is Higher Criticism that is in retreat. Among his publications are The Inspiration and Authority of the Bible and The Plan of Salvation.
